About Agents

"How do I get an agent?" is a common question. First, realize that you might not need one. Lots of nonfiction authors sell their own books. I have never successfully worked with a literary agent, and have actually sold manuscripts that agents were unable to. Unless you're trying to break into a publishing house that doesn't accept unagented material, it may be worth putting in the time to try to sell your book(s) yourself.

Truth be told, it's just as hard to get an agent as it is to get a publisher. Still, if you're really uncomfortable negotiating contracts, or if you just don't have the time to market your own work, or if you're mostly wanting to write novels, approach a literary agent the same way you would a publisher: With a fantastic query letter. (And be prepared to show either an nonfiction proposal or a complete fiction manuscript when the agent shows interest!) For more about obtaining an agent, see "Top Five Ways Not To Get a Literary Agent" and "The Safest Way to Search for an Agent."
